Coming Out Night!
storytelling
From October 1 to 31, Nijmegen will be colored rainbow during Queerious: a month full of activities, encounters, and discoveries around gender, love, identity, and visibility. Local organizations, artists, and committed residents are joining forces to create a multifaceted program that offers space to celebrate, learn, and reflect together on what it means to be yourself. From exhibitions and films to walks, drinks, theater, and in-depth conversations—there is something for everyone. Celebrate Coming Out Night together with us on October 10th during a night filled with stories, comedy and music at Lindenberg Cultuurhuis.
20:00 Geoffrey van der Ven - What’s the Difference?
‘What’s the difference?’ is an intimate and thought-provoking performance about the journey through shame, being othered and coping mechanisms. Basically, Geoffrey overshares like a drunk girl in a bathroom. He combines storytelling, personal narratives, and mythology to create an evening of connection, recognition, and discomfort.
21:30 Queer Shorts
Let’s share some more stories, and we’ll keep it short! After all, what’s a better way to strengthen the community and to fight bigotry than sharing stories and having a good laugh together.
Hosted by comedian Soula Notos, a Dutch-Greek storyteller and comedian and longtime performing friend of Meneer Otis. She is the organizer and host of the bimonthly Soula's Storytelling Nights at Theater Kikker and a member of the Comedyhuis since it was founded, both located in Utrecht. Many audiences in Europe have encountered this bubbly hugger with her interactive and physical style. Her work focuses on themes of power relations, connection, equality, freedom and lightness.
Actor and storyteller Meysam Forooz will be joining us with a story on his coming out. Many of his stories are based on his life in Iran, the country he fled in 2016. Previously Meysam joined our Storytelling Festivals performing Four Weddings and an Iranian Funeral, about the lives of gay men in Iran, and The Chord, an Iranian family tragedy and murder mystery telling the story of women’s resilience and the societal bonds which test it to the limit.
more to be announced…
23:00 Come on out to the afterparty!
Feeling artsy yourself afterwards? Join us as we continue our night and head out to do some serious dancing at De Plak. Famous is De Plak for their cheeseball ("kaasgehakt"), served with delicious hand-cut fries and lots of vegetables. Notorious is De Plak for its parties in the basement. And extraordinary is De Plak because of its impact on Nijmegen Culture and history, including being a pioneer when it comes to Queer culture. So come out and get in that basement!
(!) During this evening, images and video material will be created for promotional purposes.
Coming Out Night is a collaboration between Meneer Otis, Lindenberg Cultuurhuis and De Plak
